These movies all take some inherently ridiculous premise—zombies, mutant ants, sentient toys, vampires in a rock band—and refuse to let it get heavy, choosing wisecracks and mayhem over dread every time. Nostalgia does a lot of work here too, whether it's '80s creature-feature throwbacks, Christmas-monster mashups, or spaghetti-western pastiche, all filtered through a knowing wink at their own genre trappings. The through-line isn't fear or stakes, it's the pleasure of watching absurd chaos unfold with characters who are clearly having as much fun as the audience.
