These films keep returning to the same haunted architecture: a decaying house, castle, or convent that traps its inhabitants alongside the dead who won't release their claim on the living. Desire is the mechanism of haunting itself, forbidden or doomed love curdles into possession, vengeance, or bodily corruption, so that romance and supernatural dread become indistinguishable. Even the more historical entries carry that same charge, guilt and longing seeping through crumbling walls until the past physically overtakes the present.
