These films keep returning to the moment a border, a bureaucracy, or a boat becomes the line between one life and another—crossings that are rarely clean, whether it's a refugee family bartering love against upheaval, a servant swallowed by a foreign household, or a father fighting paperwork to save his child. What links them is the pressure of systems (immigration offices, occupying regimes, criminal underworlds) pressing down on intimate, human-scale hopes, so that even the warmer stories carry an undertow of precarity and the harder ones tip into outright peril.
