What links these films is less a genre than a wound: something essential — a name, a face, a marriage, a mind — has been erased or is dissolving, and the story is the effort to reconstruct or grieve it. That erosion shows up as literal dementia in Vortex and Deborah Logan, as engineered or traumatic forgetting in Reminiscence, Regression, and Dark City, and as the slower vanishing of self through separation, illness, or time in Paris, Texas and Beautiful Memories. Even the outliers — the possessed farms and haunted mining outposts — keep circling back to identity coming apart under pressure, so the horror and the tenderness end up feeling like two sides of the same loss.
