Reality Turning Into Horror
Reality Unraveling Into Dread
These films share a specific move: a protagonist who investigates, writes, performs, or simply perceives too closely, and in doing so triggers the collapse of the boundary meant to keep them safe from what they're studying. Authors' fictions infect the world, actors merge with the roles they play, dreamers can't locate the exit from the dream, and doppelgängers or manuscripts bleed across the membrane separating make-believe from fact. The dread here isn't jump-scare horror but the slower vertigo of watching the rules of consensus reality get rewritten mid-scene, usually without the comfort of an explanation once the credits roll.
