The opposite of HBO
A network really does have a feel, and it survives holding the genre still — HBO is not simply a channel that commissions more crime drama. But the most recognisable network on television is not HBO. It is CBS. And on every reading that separates them, CBS is HBO in a mirror.
The objection, first
Everyone believes a network has a house style, and the belief is almost impossible to test naively, because a network is mostly a commissioning budget pointed at genres. HBO looks dark because HBO buys crime and prestige drama. Cartoon Network looks playful because it buys cartoons. Measure the mood of a channel and you will mostly recover its shopping list.
So nothing here compares a show to television in general. Every one of the twenty readings is scored against other series of the same primary genre and the same decade. A network only registers if its crime drama is unlike other crime drama of its own era. This is the same control as the director piece, for the same reason: without it the answer is always genre.
The second objection, which is worse
With that done, you can measure how far a network’s average show sits from the middle across all twenty readings at once. Do that and a tidy story appears: the boutique channels have enormous signatures, Netflix has almost none. The obvious headline is that the streamers commission everything and stand for nothing.
It is an artefact of counting. An average over twenty-seven shows is noisy, and noise does not cancel — a small network scores high for being small. Netflix has 713 series in here; its average is steady for the same reason a big poll has a small margin of error.
The fix is to ask what a network of that exact size would score if its shows were picked at random. Forty random draws per network, at its own show count, and every score divided by what chance produces. That number is the only one worth ranking.
Distinctiveness against chance, genre and decade already held still. 1.0 is a network indistinguishable from a random group of shows.
What survives
HBO is real: 4.56 times chance, third of fifty-four. The house style people talk about is in the data and it is not the genre mix.
But CBS is first, at 5.35 — the most consistent identity on television, ahead of HBO, ahead of Disney Channel, ahead of Adult Swim. A network nobody describes as having a vision turns out to have the most legible one, because having a formula and having a vision look identical to this measurement.
And Netflix is ninth at 3.76, above Showtime, AMC and BBC One. The idea that Netflix stands for nothing is the counting artefact, not a finding. Its signature is faint in absolute terms — no single reading reaches 0.21 — but it is faint and consistent across 713 shows, which is a different thing from absent.
What is genuinely absent sits at the bottom. HBO Max at 1.14, across forty-three series, is the one network in this table that is close to statistically indistinguishable from randomly chosen television. The streaming arm of the most distinctive premium channel in the business has no detectable identity of its own, which is the more interesting fact given what sits three rows from the top.
The mirror
The two most distinctive American networks are distinctive in precisely opposite directions. Not roughly opposite. On all twelve readings that separate them, they sit on opposite sides of zero.
Each reading against series of the same genre and decade. Every line crosses zero.
HBO: heavier, cleverer, sadder, more ambiguous, more beautiful, more intimate, and markedly less comforting. CBS: warmer, more hopeful, more comforting, and lower on darkness, dread, weight and doubt than other shows of its own genre.
That last clause is the one that matters. CBS is not merely making lighter programmes than HBO — it is making the least troubling possible version of the same genres. A CBS crime drama is less dark than other crime drama. That is a house style, and it is as deliberate as anything on premium cable.
The most network-ish shows on each
Not the best rated — the ones whose own readings point most nearly the same way as their channel’s average. What the network is, rather than what is good on it.
