Finding
The rarest thing in cinema
Sad and funny at the same time is described as if it were a genre, and people can name the films instantly. That is because there are almost none. Thirty out of fourteen thousand clear one standard deviation on both melancholy and playfulness — twenty-six times fewer than chance would produce — and past one and a half, the count is zero.
The shape of the problem
Every well-known film by how melancholy it is against how playful it is, in standard deviations. Darker cells hold more films.
The two readings correlate at −0.663. Films run in a band from the sad and unplayful corner to the playful and unsad one, and the further out along either axis you go, the narrower the band gets. By the time melancholy reaches +2, there is essentially no playfulness left anywhere on the row.
If the two readings were independent, roughly 777 films would clear +1 on both. Thirty do. Not a slightly depressed count — an order of magnitude.
The thirty
Everything above +1 on both, strongest first. Read live, so a film joins this list the moment one is scored that manages it.

Several of the rest are films people reach for immediately when asked for this combination, which is the interesting part: a category with thirty members, most of which are famous for being in it.
The objection, which is a good one
Some readings are opposed by construction. Comfort and darkness correlate at −0.944, which is not a finding about cinema — they are close to two ends of one axis, and a film that is one cannot be the other. There are several pairs like that, and every one of them is more opposed than melancholy and playfulness.
So the claim here is deliberately not that sadness and comedy are the most opposed things in cinema. It is that they are far more opposed than they sound. Nothing in the concepts requires it. A film can be tense and beautiful, dark and warm, strange and comforting — those combinations are all well populated. Sad and funny reads like another of those and behaves like an axis.
The honest reading is that filmmakers treat tone as a commitment. Having decided which way a film leans, they lean, and the small group that refuses to is doing something structurally harder than a mixed reputation suggests.
They are also rather good
The thirty average 7.07 on audience ratings against 6.58 for the well-known catalogue as a whole. That is half a point, which is a lot, and it is thirty films, which is not enough to conclude anything. Take it as a hint rather than a result: difficulty and quality may travel together here, or this may be a category nobody attempts without a reason.
If you want the wider version rather than the extreme one, there is a whole shelf of films that manage both at a gentler threshold, which re-runs itself as the catalogue grows.
