Films that refuse to resolve
Films that end without telling you what happened, or what it meant. The kind of film that has become steadily rarer.
In the 1960s, close to a third of well-known dramas left the audience genuinely unsure by the end. Today it is around one in eight. Films did not become less varied overall -- but they did become far more willing to answer their own questions.
